Fox pre-cancels Whedon's DollhouseFor those who've been wondering, no, Fox has not yet cancelled Dollhouse or, if they have, they haven't publicised it yet. And the official line on the supposed 'final' episode seems to be this: there is a fourteenth episode. It was never intended to be the final episode of the season. Episode 13, entitled 'Omega' and written by Tim Minear was always intended to be the last episode of the season. There is, however, a fourteenth episode which is not going to be aired but will, according to Felicia Day, show up on the DVD.
Hot on the heels of news that Joss Whedon is re-shooting the pilot for his upcoming sci-fi/thriller series, Dollhouse, executives at FOX announced that the show has been pre-canceled.“We don’t anticipate that the show will appeal to a broad audience,” remarked a FOX spokesperson. “It’s just way too…’out there’ to bring in the ratings share we’ll need to compete in early 2009, so we’re pulling the plug. We’ll air three episodes out of order in January in a timeslot usually reserved for Billy Mays and Kevin Trudeau, a fourth episode will air on FSN Tennessee during the Super Bowl, and then we’ll replace it with an as-yet-untitled sitcom starring Dane Cook.”
“[The pilot] Joss is re-shooting probably won’t even air,” the spokesperson added.
Potential fans of the doomed series began a “Save Dollhouse” letter-writing campaign in November 2007, shortly after production was announced. FOX receives hundreds of impassioned pleas to keep the series on the air every day.
“The response has been great,” Whedon said in a recent interview on Entertainment Insider. “I’ve been blessed with some very loyal fans.”
When asked about rumors that most of the letters are written by one fan, Derrick Stroyer, who also continues to write similar letters pleading for the return of Firefly, another failed Whedon vehicle, the writer/director/producer/caterer replied, “Yes. Okay. A very loyal fan.”
In the same interview, Whedon announced that he will definitely not be working on a sequel to the movie based on Dollhouse. The movie, tentatively titled Echo, will continue the storyline where the series inevitably leaves off. Echo will be in theaters on August 19, 2011. Derrick Stroyer is already in line for tickets.

I still wonder why the hell Whedon keeps going back to Fox to sponsor his shows. They screwed him over with Firefly, even when they called him back because of Buffy's success. Fox has been known to make horrible decisions on shows in general lately, and putting Dollhouse on Friday nights when most people are out with friends is a good example of that. And it may be far fetched to think that they'd look at any Hulu statistics to see who in their stupidly limited market is catching up to episodes via streaming.
Apparently, iTunes downloads of the show are also counting towards the ratings. Of course, it's currently only available on the US site but it also means that the time it's showing on TV affects the ratings of the show less since you can download the show and watch it when you like. Or not watch it and still count as if you had. ;p
Which is honestly a better way of tracking the show. Since lots of fans don't have a Nielsen box on top of their TV.
it actually got picked up. they're just moving it to a different spot. all thirteen that were suppose to air have in fact aired over here and they rock. it's companion series however is dead. at least as far as i can tell. *shrug* terminator was nice but not awesome it's last season and the melodrama made my teeth hurt.
